“Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” After the Resurrection Jesus has one more lesson to convey to St. Peter: if you claim to love me you prove it by taking care of those who are mine. A Eliza sings in My Fair Lady, don’t talk of love, show me. This is an important lesson for Christians throughout the ages. For example, there are political movements in the United States, populated by Christians, who seek to eliminate any program or policy which helps the poor, the sick, the disadvantaged. That’s socialism, I got mine, goes the argument, now you get yours. That is clean contrary to the message of Jesus. We are all in this together according to Jesus as children of the One God. To ignore those who are hurting around us wounds the very Body of Christ of which we are all members.
