During the fifty days of Easter the first reading has been taken from the Acts of the Apostles. It took 46 of those days to read the first nineteen chapters of the book verse by verse. The last four days are given over to the final nine chapters. Those part of ACTS are worth reading through more slowly for they show how St. Paul dealt with outside political and religious forces that were attempting to control him. (Among the scenes is a personal favorite: At this point Festus interrupted Paul’s defense. “You are out of your mind, Paul!” he shouted. “Your great learning is driving you insane.”) Even as he was being put on trial and interrogated and imprisoned “he proclaimed the Kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ.” We today can feel overwhelmed and threatened by the way of the world. Like Paul we must keep our eyes on the prize and focus on the message of Jesus as our constant guide on how to act in life.
