Elijah is one of the great characters of the Bible. In his confrontation with the prophets of Baal he proposes that his God, the God of Israel, is the God who answers with fire. When this proves true the people profess faith. But ultimately this profession doesn’t last — Elijah continues to chide the people for backsliding. It seems that the spectacular, the wondrous, the miraculous is not a firm enough basis on which to build a life of faith. We hear later in the story that Elijah himself finds God in “the tiny, whispering sound.” Similarly, our relationship with God has its rock foundation not so much on the unusual manifestations of God but in the quiet of our own heart responding to God’s whisper of love.
