Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus has a long tradition in the Church. In the seventeenth century this devotion was given a prominent place in the prayers and liturgy of the Church with a special feast day. In that era the faith had taken on a very rigorous, intellectual, even severe tone. Devotion to the Sacred Heart helped believers to find a connection with the love and mercy of God in the kindness and compassion the heart of Jesus exhibited during his life. In our era St. Faustina, in her vision of Divine Mercy, also focused on the Sacred Heart. She added to the traditional devotion a reminder that God’s love is not meant simply for me but meant to be shared with others.
