Jesus began the Sermon on the Mount with the Beatitudes. They serve as a vision statement for the entire mission of Jesus. In the current social context one of the beatitudes stands out: Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. Those who are protesting the racism which is endemic to our society are hungering for a more just world. They are, therefore, blessed. When you hunger and thirst you do something to fill your emptiness; you find the food and drink that will sate your need. The protests continue because the thirst for justice is not yet slaked. The promise of Jesus is that we do not protest in vain, that the hunger for justice will be satisfied.
