His mother said to him, “Son, why have you done this to us?” Jesus said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” The two holiest people who every lived had a hard time understanding each other! So we should not be surprised when we have a failure to communicate. The instructive part of this exchange is how they bridged the gap: not with accusations, not by judging motives, not with anger. No, Mary and Jesus asked questions. They worked to come to an understanding. That should be our model as well. We should expect that there will be times when our relationships hit a rough spot. We must gently explore the misunderstanding.
