Elijah is a major figures in Judaism. To this day, a place is set for Elijah at the Passover table. The Bible recognizes him as one who was zealous for God. His very name Eli-jah translates as “My God is Yahweh.” His complete dedication to God gets him in trouble with the king so he hides out in a pagan town, with a pagan widow. She recognizes his complete dedication to God and the things of God: “As the LORD, your God, lives.” The lesson we can draw is to re-order our priorities. Even us good, church-going people tend to think about what we want to do and then see how God fits into that. Elijah’s starting point: what does God want me to do.
