The Book of Tobit is basically a family drama. Tobit and Anna rejoiced and went out to the gate of Nineveh to meet their daughter-in-law. The bible is full of national and cosmic stories but domestic ones, not so much. Continuing that trend, the saints that the church celebrates include many monks and martys, miraacle workers and missionaries, bishops, popes, founders of religious communities, hermits, and royal patrons. What there are not many of are married couples. Pope John Paul II wanted to correct this imbalance since, as a matter of fact, most saints — largely uncanonized — are husbands and wives, children and parents. He went out of his way to canonize Louis and Zelie Martin, the parents of the Little Flower, to show what sanctity can look like in the home. Our task today is to find the presence of God in the daily chores that go into ordinary life for that is how we become saints.
