If you are from a large family at some point you probably accused your mother of having a favorite. “But I love all my children,” she no doubt responded. True, but since each child is different a mother must love each child in the unique way they need. Which helps us understand that the Jewish people are for God “a people peculiarly his own” (Deuteronomy 26:18.) That is why we refer to the Jewish people as the “chosen people.” Their unique role in history is to testify to the constant and unchanging love of God. They continue in that role even in the new dispensation. Christians must build on that spiritual foundation as we discover the “peculiar” way that we bring God’s love into the wider world.
