Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe.” The royal official in the gospel story is like most of us — asking Jesus to do something for him. His eyes were fixed on his child and Jesus was just a means to his desired end. All too often we turn to God in times of illness or facing a tragedy and pretty much ignore God the rest of the time. Jesus was born to reverse that dynamic. God is not meant as a mister fixit to call when the sink is clogged. Rather, Jesus’ life demonstrates that God is, in fact, the foundation of all that is — every move we make, every breath we take. Think of other relationships we have. While it is great to have someone to turn to in a crisis, it is the long years of being friends that make them such a ready resource in a pinch. Today is a good day to weave God into our dailiness so God will recognize us when the time comes.
