“My mind’s made up. Don’t confuse me with the facts.” Don’t tell me about climate change, my mind is made up. This seems to be a mantra of our age but in fact goes back to the Bible. When the rich man tells Father Abraham that his brothers won’t listen to Moses and the prophets he is saying, “Their mind is made up.” This should serve as a warning for us. We too easily fall into the habit of thinking a certain way or acting in a certain way. Lent is the time to let new “facts” — God’s call to repentance and compassion — change our minds and hearts. Our tortured heart, as Jeremiah puts it, only finds peace in God’s grace and mercy.
