In the Latin Bible the book of Sirach was known as the Liber Ecclesiasticus, the church’s book, because it was used by the early church as a source of catechetical and ethical training. One bit of that training is about the importance of friends. “A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter; he who finds one finds a treasure.” This bit of spiritual wisdom has a profound human basis. Everyone needs a confidant, someone that they can be completely open and honest with. Accepting the other just as they are and being accepted by another just as you are is a profound example of how God loves and accepts us. Today is a good day to give thanks to God for the friends in your life.
