The scripture readings for today are about violence. Joseph’s brothers inflict violence upon him out of jealousy. The tenants in the parable inflict violence on the servants and, finally, the son out of greed. The chief priests and elders promote violence as the solution to the situation Jesus proposes in the parable because of their righteousness. However, the phrase from the book of Genesis, “Here comes that master dreamer! Come on, let us kill him and … then see what comes of his dreams,” calls to mind Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He was a master dreamer who saw non-violence as the path beyond jealousy, greed, righteousness. The violence inflicted upon him did not kill his dream but re-inforced and empowered it. As we continue our Lenten journey let’s look for ways of being in the world which are not based on power and force but on compassion and justice.
