Jesus got into trouble with the authorities because “he called God his own father, making himself equal to God.” Of course, in the prayer he left us we are all invited to call God “Our Father.” The prophet Isaiah imaged God as a mother. “Can a mother forget her infant? … I will never forget you.” There are many other images of God in the Bible — God is like a warrior, God is like a husband, God is like a rock, etc. All of which should remind us that every image we have of God is always as much wrong as it is right. God is bigger and wider and deeper than any image. So in our prayer let’s be careful to let God be God.
