St. Joseph was not given a speaking part in the Bible. To understand who he was and what he stood for the Church has looked for Old Testament referents. St. Joseph is a descendant of King David, heir to the divine promise. Jesus needed Joseph’s acknowledgement as his child in order to be the “son of David.” Joseph is a man of faith like Abraham who ” believed, hoping against hope” in Mary’s goodness. And Joseph is like the original Joseph from the Book of Genesis in being a dreamer. Joseph trusted his dreams that God had for him and models for us that we should too. God’s dream for us is our joy and happiness. No matter other counter voices, we must trust that dream.
