During Ordinary Time the scriptures chosen for each day are a continuous reading, lectio continuo. The lectionary picks two books of the Bible and goes through them chapter by chapter. During Lent the two readings are specifically chosen for that day and serve to complement or complete each other. Today, for example, the Old Testament lesson from the book of Deuteronomy has the line “Choose Life.” In the Gospel Jesus says: “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.” In other words, to choose true life, a life in God, requires that we choose the cross.
