Children were obviously very important to Jesus. He invokes them frequently in helping us understand what it means to be disciples. We must “become like children to enter the kingdom of God.” We must be as humble as a child to be great in the kingdom. The kingdom of God belongs to children and “whoever does not accept the Kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.” The Catholic Church is confronting the dreadful reality that its priests and other trusted individuals through abuse have robbed children of those kingdom qualities which make them models for our emulation. We must place children in the midst of our thoughts as Jesus did and realize that their welfare carries more weight than any institutional concern.
