The parable of the sheep and the goats in Matthew 25 should send a shudder down the spine of everyone who is religious. The parable suggests that God is not interested in your prayer life, whether you are baptized or not, how many prayers you say, if you go to Church, the commandments you keep, that Jesus is your personal savior. Divine judgment is a matter of your love for neighbor expressed in concrete action. The reason that this criteria is the one that matters most can be found in the Old Testament: Be holy, for I, the LORD, your God, am holy. God’s holiness is expressed in letting rain fall on the just and unjust, letting the sun shine on the good and bad alike.
