In the United States a controversy has bubbled for several years about posting the Ten Commandments in classrooms and court rooms. Apparently the thought behind it is that seeing those commandments might inspire better behavior. Of course, for Christians the Ten Commandments are only the beginning. While we have inherited those commandments as part of our heritage of faith, Jesus added additional commandments such as those in Luke 6 that we are to heed. Perhaps we don’t recognize them because they aren’t in commandment form but they are commands nonetheless. “Thou shalt be compassionate. Thou shalt not judge. Thou shalt forgive. Thou shalt not condemn. Thou shalt give.” The great thing about the commands of Jesus is that they include a promise. If we obey his commandments, “a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap.”
