The common law, the anglo-saxon law that the USA inherited from England, approach is to think in terms of minimums. We have the fewest number of laws that are necessary to keep good order in society. The law in this way of thinking is a necessary evil for a civilized society. As long as you aren’t disobeying one of the written laws you can do what you please. The Biblical approach to law is very different. In the Bible, the law is a great good, a blessing. Because of the law we know what we are supposed to do in order to live a happy life as God intends. The law, therefore, is an ideal that we strive to attain and a guide to growth.
