I had a poster which contained in big letters the saying of Jesus: “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” At the bottom of the poster was appended: but first it will make you miserable. We are experiencing the truth expressed by that poster in the current efforts in our country to confront the ongoing sin of racism. We are at the being made miserable part of coming to the truth as we face the changes that need to happen politically, economically, educationally, medically, socially. What is writ large in society echoes in our individual lives. Twelve step spirituality tells us that the way to sanity includes the misery of making a “fearless moral inventory ” — but ultimately leads to freedom.
