The modern awareness of the harm done (to both men and women) by patriarchy has been one of the blessings of our age. With some justification, the Bible has been accused of promoting, or at least excusing, patriarchy. However, a careful reading of the Bible explodes the myths of patriarchy. For example, there are feminine images of God to remind us that God is beyond gender and should not be thought of in male terms. “Can a mother forget her infant? …I will never forget you.” Even Jesus calling God his Father is not intended as a statement of power. Rather, the Father is “at work,” “gives live,” “loves.” We can only call God “Father” in a non-patriarchal way — as one sharing life and love.
