We pray in the ancient creed of the Church that after Jesus “was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell.” This curious article of belief reminds us that everyone has the opportunity to participate in the saving grace of Jesus, even those who preceded him. One of the oldest Christian sermons we possess has Jesus meeting Adam and leading him, and all of his descendants — Noah, Moses, King David — into glory. Holy Saturday gives us the opportunity to reflect that God is not limited by our perceptions of space and time. This is the perfect day to pray that a loved one who does not know Christ will be given a share in amazing grace in a way that is beyond our ken.
