The parables of Jesus are open-ended; we must complete them in our lives. Think of the story of the Prodigal Son. Three possible endings: the older son goes into the party for his wayward brother and is filled with the Father’s compassion and love. OR, the older son goes into the party because the Father wants him to but continues to be filled with resentment and bitterness. OR, the older son does not go into the party because the grudge he bears doesn’t let him get beyond the hurt. In our own lives we face the same three choices when dealing with our own woundedness. Will we enter fully into God’s compassionate love? Will we wallow in resentment? Or will be hold onto old hurts?
