In the book and movie, The Martian, the astronaut stranded on Mars needs to grow food to survive. He has sun, soil, seed, and water. He needs something else — bacteria to break open the nitrogen which the water liberates from the soil. (Happily, his body is full of bacteria!) The prophet tell us that the word of God is like the rain and snow come down … making it fertile and fruitful. What would be the spiritual equivalent of the bacteria which help the word of God to break open grace in the soil of our souls? Jesus suggests that forgiveness is the key. Right in the Lord’s prayer he teaches us forgiveness and to make sure we get it he emphasizes forgiveness at the end.
