The mother of the sons of Zebedee approached Jesus with her sons … She answered him, “Command that these two sons of mine sit, one at your right and the other at your left, in your kingdom.” Jesus called James and John the “sons of thunder.” It looks like their mother was the thunder! This request for advancement, for benefits comes right after Jesus told the apostles that condemnation, suffering and death were on the horizon. They had a hard time getting that the way to joy meant taking up one’s cross. Of course, it is not just them. We too try to find shortcuts that don’t involve difficulty. But the promise is that living a life of service is the way to fullness of life.
