During Lent the two daily readings are chosen to comment on each other. The Old Testament lesson from the book of Deuteronomy says, Choose life. Jesus in the gospel of Luke that a disciple must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. These readings tell us is that when we choose life we have to choose all of life. We can’t choose the nice parts, the parts we like. Choosing life means giving of ourselves in a relationship, responding to the claim that others have on us, eliminating from our hearts all those unhealthy thoughts and practices. We choose the good times and the bad, the pain and the glory as part of the plan that God has for our lives.
