You say, “The LORD’s way is not fair!” I certainly have said that. Shouldn’t so much goodness get that much reward? Like most children I was acutely aware of fairness. When there was one piece of pie left my mother would have to carefully cut it in half for my sister and me so that neither piece would be bigger than the other. It was only fair! It is only now, years later, that it dawned on me that my mother did not keep the piece for herself — which would have been only fair since she had done the work of making the pie! Instead of fairness she was about giving. And that is the lesson to help us understand how God operates — not with fairness but with generosity, abundance, giving, blessing. When we are tempted to say “the Lord’s way is not fair,’ for example, when bad things happen to good people, we must look for the blessing for that is where we’ll find God.
