You have, no doubt, seen the news reporter interviewing the person who just won the lottery. Inevitably the response to their good fortune is some variation of “the Lord is really blessing me.” Which raises the question: if you don’t win the lottery does that mean the Lord is NOT blessing you? That seems to be how the apostles think. They are shocked when Jesus breaks the equation between good fortune and blessing. They had imagined that having things go well meant God was for you. If that is not the case, “Then who can be saved?” What Jesus tries to get the rich young man, and the disciples, and us, to understand is that we are being blessed by God no matter what the external circumstance. Relying on God and trusting in God’s will in your life instead of your finances or good health or family peace is the way to true and lasting happiness.
