“There was a rich man who dined sumptuously each day. And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores.” One obvious lesson we should draw from the Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus is to reach out and care for our neighbors who are in need. A less obvious, but just as important lesson, is that we must wake up to the structures which produce a Lazarus. The Rich Man took for granted the system that kept him rich and made Lazarus poor. That’s just the way it is. Some things will never change, according to the song. Jesus says things must change. We must become aware of how society is designed to keep certain people on the bottom.
