Rick Warren, author of The Purpose Driven Life and pastor of a mega-church in California makes this confession. He was challenged why his church didn’t do more for the poor so he went back to the Bible. “I found those 2,000 verses on the poor. How did I miss that? I went to Bible college, two seminaries, and I got a doctorate. How did I miss God’s compassion for the poor?” That is a good reminder that we all tend to pick up on those parts of the Bible or the teaching of the Church that we agree with. As we go into Lent we are reminded by Isaiah: This is the fasting that I wish — one where we are attentive to those hurting around us.
