In one sense you can think of Christianity as the miracle of the ordinary. A woman is pregnant, a child is born, a life is cut short by death — what could be more ordinary than that, yet that is the story of salvation. Our own lives as Christians are most often found by living the ordinary with courage and integrity. Since God is God, so far beyond us, we can easily imagine that a Godly person is extraordinary, capable of heroic virtue far beyond the likes of me. In fact, the Bible teaches the opposite. Naaman imagined that to have God would be an out of body experience and we was disappointed to find otherwise. “If the prophet had told you to do something extraordinary, would you not have done it?” The ordinary act of washing brought healing. In our lives the ordinary care we extend to those around us, the ordinary fidelity with which we live our lives is our path into the kingdom of heaven.
