The leaders thought they could conspire against Jeremiah because “it will not mean the loss of instruction from the priests, nor of counsel from the wise, nor of messages from the prophets.” They believed that the point of religion was instruction, counsel and messages. Jesus brought a new emphasis on what it meant to be a person of faith: service and sacrifice. “The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Yes, we are glad for the instruction and counsel that we get from the Bible, from the Church. But the instruction has as its aim showing us what it means to be a servant of God. Being a church goer is not limited to what I get out of it but how what I get changes me to serve the needs of the people of God all around me. The message of Jesus is intimately bound up to his sacrifice on the cross. We are truly disciples when we are willing to sacrifice ourselves for “the many” who are hurting.
