Jesus used the image of a loving parent to describe the care that God extends toward us. If you know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him. When you think about it our parents don’t give us everything we ask for. Very seldom does a child say “Give me more broccoli.” No, they want more chocolate cake. But parents give their children what the need first. So with God. As a loving parent God gives us what we need even when that is not what we ask for. When St. Luke reports this saying he substitutes “the Holy Spirit” for “good things” just to make God’s gift clear.
