The way the media reports about the US Bishops it seems they look on issues of sexual ethics — abortion, contraception, the LGBTQ community, etc. — as the great hindrances in our relationship with God. The Bible has a different emphasis: If you remove from your midst oppression, false accusation and malicious speech; If you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted; Then light shall rise for you in the darkness. The way we talk about one another and the way we treat one another, particularly those that are hurting, are the keys to the spiritual life. This Lent provides the opportunity for us to examine our relationships and see if they full of the kindness and compassion that God has for us.
