While we can’t predict the future we can prepare for it. We watch the weather report to know what to wear the next day. We plan our retirement so we won’t have to eat cat food in our old age. We study in preparation for the test the professor will spring on us. Lent reminds us all of what lies in our future. “Remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return.” Our Lenten practices, therefore, are preparations for death. We pray so that God will recognize us when our time comes. We fast in order to discover that we really don’t need much for happiness. We give alms as a way of building relationships with those who will welcome us to glory.
