In preparing a budget you put the expenses on one side and the income on the other and hope that the income exceeds the expenses. We can imagine God operating that way — weighing how many good things we have done versus how many bad things and seeing which counts most. The Bible teaches us otherwise. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus teaches us that calling someone names can be as serious as killing them. “Whoever says, ‘You fool,’ will be liable to fiery Gehenna.” Our Lord wants us to understand that in the calculus of God there aren’t objective measures of severity. Rather, we are judged on whether or not we recognized the presence of God in every person and situation that we encounter.
