Ronald Reagan once famously said, “The government that governs best, governs least.” That attitude reflects an American (Anglo-Saxon) approach to law — that laws infringe on freedom, hence one has the least number of laws in order for society to operate safely. This was not the Jewish approach to law. For them the law is a great blessing for it shows us how to act, how to behave. Operating within the 613 laws in the Torah is what makes for a genuine human environment. That is why Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount insisted that he is not about tearing down the law. Every jot and tittle matters. Americans must find a way of appreciating this Biblical approach to law — not limiting freedom but life-giving.
