Those of us of a certain age might remember Tommy Smothers accusing his brother: “Mom always liked you best!” If a mother is ever challenged with that accusation she will, inevitably, answer, I love all my children equally. Which is, no doubt, true but on the level of compatibility there might be one child that a mother connects with. For example, my mother loved to bake, as does one of my sisters. They could talk and talk about this interest they had in common. All of which helps us to understand Moses telling the Hebrew children: you are to be a people peculiarly God’s own. We are all the beloved children of God but we honor the special relationship the Chosen People have with God.
