When people come to confession they generally confess something like lying or cursing or stealing or some sexual transgression. Sinfulness has to do with their faults and failings. That is not the way the prophet looks at sin. Isaiah says, Cease doing evil; learn to do good. Make justice your aim: redress the wronged, hear the orphan’s plea, defend the widow. The way to cease going evil is to care for the “wronged,” to reach out to those who have no one to care for them like the widow and orphan. Look at how we are treating one another to find where sin exists. This tells us that Lent is not so much about my self-improvement from my faults. Rather, it is about building up the connections we have with those around us, particularly those in need.
