When I woke up this morning my socks were on the floor. I had a long debate with myself about what it would take for my creaky old body to bend over and pick them up. I wonder if it was experiences like that which produced the images in the Bible about “a stiff-necked people” and those who have a “hard heart.” Just as our bodies find it hard to do certain things as we age, so our spirits can get set into an accustomed way of acting or thinking. The Bible suggests we need some spiritual flexibility — the ability to get out of the rut we find ourselves in and to become more kind, more compassionate, more forgiving as God intends us to be.
