Isaiah uses a farming image to describe the word of God. “The rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful.” It made me think of tomatoes. It takes a while for the tomatoes to grow. You’ve got to keep them warm and watered and watch the bugs and the weeds. But when they finally start producing tomatoes fill all the buckets and baskets you have. In the Church now we are in the weeding and watering phase. The promise is that the word of God will achieve the end for which I sent it. If we stay faithful we can be sure that soon we’ll be filled with buckets of spiritual tomatoes.
