Do you remember a TV advertisement from a few years ago? “They make money the old-fashioned way: They earn it.” The idea of “earning it” is a big part of American culture. There’s no such thing as a free lunch goes a popular saying. While that might be true with society it is not true with God. We don’t have to earn God’s grace. Grace is a gift, which helps us understand why Jesus did not call the worthy to follow him but the hurting. “I have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners.” We can be tempted by a feeling of not deserving the joy and happiness that God gives — but whether we deserve it or not, God will give it.
