The parable of the unforgiving debtor rings true to human nature. After the experience of needing to humble himself before his master the servant determined to lord it over someone he felt was beneath him. Our tendency is to think: I might not be much but I am at least better than this other guy. Having someone we can look down upon gives an inflated opinion of oneself. Of course, the point of the parable is that this is completely wrong-headed. There isn’t anyone who is beneath me (nor is there anyone who is better than I am.) We are all in the same boat — needing God’s grace and mercy. Our prayer today should be to recognize everyone is a brother or sister to me.
