Your piety is like a morning cloud, like the dew that early passes away. The prophet challenges Israel to look inside and see if their religious actions are changing their hearts, making them more merciful. In the parable of the Pharisee and the Publican Jesus issues a similar challenge. The criterion becomes — am I focusing more on what God is doing or what I am doing? The Pharisee ticked off all of his “piety.” The Publican begged to God to intervene in his life. As we are moving through the Lenten season we should examine our prayer. Do we tend to look at ourselves, what we are doing and what we are going through or do we create an empty space inside of ourselves where God can enter?
