In the Bible frequently the agent of God is a surprise. It was a young slave girl who told Naaman about the prophet. And the prophet surprised Naaman by not doing something dramatic to effect the cure. Jesus was a surprise to his home town given his humble origins and ordinary family. God acts in ways outside of our expectations. That lesson is one we need to take to heart. Often we put people, especially people we’ve know for a long time, into a box. We have our expectations of who they are and how they act. “Oh, that’s just Johnny being Johnny.” But God’s grace can work in unexpected ways. We must keep alert to how God is present even with someone who wasn’t a likely candidate to bear good news. The Bible says “out of the mouths of babies, the Lord fashions praise.” Today is a new day and someone will doubtless surprise us with some manifestation of the love of God.
