A perennial question for believers: why suffering? Since God is all good and all powerful couldn’t creation have been formed in such a way that there would be no suffering? Philosophers, theologians and thinkers of all stripes have wrestled with this question. One philosopher, Frederich Nietzsche, said, “That which does not kill us makes us stronger.” There is even a country western song with that refrain. (Who knew that country western singers were Nietzsche fans!) Jesus did not look on suffering in that way — as some kind of test or endurance trial but as a time to trust. You will grieve, but your grief will become joy. Christians believe that God redeems everything, even negative things, for some good purpose. That is why we keep the cross before us. As you go through whatever grief you are experiencing today, realize that God is at work and all will be well. Joy is coming.
