The Acts of the Apostles tells the story of St. Paul’s missionary journeys. During the first journey Paul concentrated his energies in the Jewish Diaspora. In presenting the message of Jesus he situated the gospel in salvation history. Paul’s instinct is that you can’t understand who Jesus is outside of the whole sweep of God’s activity for the Chosen People. That model can also be applied to our own life of faith. We must be willing to do a “fearless moral inventory” of the ups and downs of our whole life if we are going to understand the presence and action of God for us. Seeing how God has been with us gives us confidence that God will be with us in the future.
