St. Bernard has a sermon describing the devotion of people who have faith in the resurrection. They pray, they experience consolation, they find joy in life. But, the saint reminds us, we also believe in the Ascension. The apostles experienced loss, grief, doubt, confusion when Jesus ascended into heaven. The Lord had warned them: it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. Both the consolation of Resurrection and the loss at Ascension are part of the Christian life. By sending the Spirit Jesus gives what we need to make the decisions and choices that continue the work of God in the world.
