Jesus reminds the people that he “was sent” — not doing his own thing but the will of God. In ACTS we read that Paul and Barnabas were sent: completing their fasting and prayer, they laid hands on them and sent them off. In a world which holds up as an ideal to “be all that you can be” the idea of being sent, of doing God’s will, not one’s own, can be a challenge. When I was in leadership in my community we would send our men out to the missions. The leadership team would take enough time to pray for a good decision. The letter we would write to them read: “After prayer and counsel it seems to be the will of God …”
